Clive Castillo is a qualified passionate basketball coach with over ten years of experience in the UK basketball sports community,
Basketball Background
Clive was born in London, UK, to a family with roots in The Philippines, which made basketball an integral part of his life from an early age. His father, Romeo Castillo, was a well-known basketball player in his home province of Bacoor, Cavite, where he set high school scoring records. Inspired by his father’s achievements, Clive began learning the game and started playing competitively in secondary school.
Clive has been actively involved in the basketball scene in the UK, both as a player and a coach. He has competed at the National League, Local League, and University levels. Notably, he grew up in the Omega Basketball programme, now known as Greenhouse Pioneers, with legendary community coach Predrag Krneta, where he won a London title with the U-18 team and later competed at the U-19, Men’s Local, and National League levels.
After finishing Secondary School, Clive had an international experience playing in small local leagues in The Philippines. Upon returning to the UK, he joined the University of Westminster Dragons. During his sophomore year, he received the ‘Captain of the Year’ award from the student body and athletics department for his commitment and leadership in the sports program.
Outside of basketball, Clive enjoys spending time with his family, reading, cycling, and traveling during the off-season.
Coaching Style
Clive’s coaching style may differ from that of others. While winning basketball games is often seen as the primary goal, Clive believes it is not the only goal. He adopts a leadership approach that emphasises empathy over technical skills and a militant attitude. For him, understanding and relating to his players is of utmost importance.
Clive believes that providing mentorship and building meaningful relationships with athletes allows them to reach their full potential through trust, thereby fostering a winning mentality both on and off the court. He emphasises that the ability to sacrifice individual goals and learn to collaborate can open doors to opportunities and success.
In his words, “Winning Changes Everything.”
Coaching Career
Clive works with various age groups, delivering sports and basketball sessions at primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities across the UK.
Currently, he serves as the Head Coach at the University of Westminster, a position he has held since 2015. Some of his key achievements include developing structured programs, implementing effective international recruitment strategies, and leading his teams to win nine championships and secure six promotions across all competitions since 2015.
Clive founded the community club Brent Bulls CIC in 2020, based in North-West London. In 2021, Brent Bulls officially partnered with the University of Westminster to support sports activities and educational pathways in London.
For the 2024-25 season, he was appointed as a professional Men’s Assistant Coach for the BC London Lions.
