Clive Castillo has achieved another significant milestone in his coaching career by being selected as an Assistant Coach for the Great Britain Universities Men’s Basketball Team. This comes as Great Britain begins its preparations for the 2027 FISU World University Games in Chungcheong, South Korea.
Castillo’s appointment places him within a national program that boasts an exceptionally talented pool of university players. During the first identification camp held in May, the Great Britain roster included athletes from the NCAA Division I system in the United States, as well as leading university players from the UK and overseas. The initial group displayed considerable size and athleticism, featuring multiple players standing between 6’8″ and 7’2″.
The caliber of this player pool underscores the importance of the program. British university basketball has become a crucial pathway for players who continue their development in the NCAA, professional academies, and high-level domestic programs.
Dan Clark, the General Manager for the Great Britain Senior Men’s Team, emphasised the “Depth of British Talent” competing in university basketball both at home and abroad. The FISU World University Games will provide an opportunity to showcase and unite that talent at a high level.

Castillo’s appointment is particularly noteworthy due to his experience in developing players within the university setting. As the Head Coach of the English Universities Sport (EUS) Men’s National Team, he has collaborated with athletes from across England and created new opportunities for university players.
His expanding professional background adds another layer to his qualifications. Castillo has also coached at the professional level with the London Lions while continuing to work extensively in university and player development basketball. His international coaching experience, including work in Asia, gives him a perspective that extends beyond the UK university system.
With the 2027 FISU Games scheduled for August 2027, Castillo’s position will provide a significant opportunity to demonstrate his ability to develop elite university players and thrive in a high-performance international environment.
