Clive Castillo has had an impressive first year as Head Coach of the English Universities Sport (EUS) Men’s National Basketball Team, achieving both on-court success and implementing innovative initiatives aimed at strengthening the university basketball pathway.
Since being appointed to lead the 2025/26 EUS men’s program, Castillo has brought together a squad representing 15 English universities, fostering a truly national university team environment.
One of the highlights of his inaugural season occurred in May 2026 when Castillo led EUS to victory in The Nations Tournament, defeating university teams from Scotland and Wales. This success offered an early glimpse of Castillo’s capability to establish a competitive national program while uniting players from various universities and basketball backgrounds.
Looking beyond traditional fixtures, Castillo organised the first-ever North vs. South All-Star Select Game in June 2026 @ University of Nottingham. This event created a new platform for showcasing university talent from across England, allowing players to compete alongside and against some of the country’s best university basketball athletes. It also provided coaches and scouts with an additional opportunity to identify emerging talent.
The combination of competitive success and program development has been central to Castillo’s first year with EUS. Instead of viewing the national team merely as a series of matches, he has aimed to create a broader ecosystem around the program—connecting universities, identifying talent, and providing players with more opportunities to engage in high-level basketball.

With a national championship-style victory already secured and new initiatives like the North vs. South All-Star Select Game in place, Castillo’s first year lays a strong foundation for the future of EUS basketball. His next challenge is to build on this momentum and transform the program into a consistent pathway for developing England’s next generation of elite university players. One potential goal for 2026-27 is to participate in European tournaments.
